Youth work is where it all began for me. As a young girl attending Broadoak youth club in Tameside, I played games like The Grapevine and joined in the group work discussion activities from the classic 1983 book Taught Not Caught.
Later becoming a sex-ed peer educator, passing on what I’d learned and delivering my first RSE work in St Damian’s school was back in 1997 before becoming a youth and community worker for the council in 1998. It was these memorable experiences alongside becoming a teen mum that led to my 28-year career in youth work and RSHE.
Peer Education Training

A Pack of Three has grown into a 12-week peer education programme that prepares young people to become health and wellbeing leaders in their own communities.
Over 12 weeks, a cohort of 8–12 young people will:
- Learn about key health & wellbeing topics (sexual health, relationships, puberty, periods, online safety, resilience, and more).
- Develop group facilitation skills and practice delivering activities.
- Gain confidence in handling challenging behaviour and peer dynamics.
- Plan and deliver their own youth-friendly health sessions.
At the end of the programme, young people graduate as a cohort and can choose their own title – whether that’s champions, leaders, connectors, educators, or something entirely their own. The point is: they own it.
Why Peer Education?
Because the best people to get the message across to young people… are other young people. Peer educators become powerful connectors in their own communities, passing on knowledge and confidence that lasts.
Peer education is a proven method in UK health promotion, where training individuals within a community enables them to share health messages effectively. This approach leverages trust and relatability, facilitating behaviour change.
A study assessing the Mental Health Foundation’s Peer Education Project (PEP) found improvements in students’ mental health knowledge and help-seeking intentions.
Cost
The Pack of Three 12-week programme is delivered by me and includes:
- Planning and preparation
- Travel and delivery (12 x 2-hour sessions)
- Resources and materials
- Evaluation and reporting
Cost per programme (8–12 young people): £3,200
This investment builds confident, resilient young leaders who continue the work long after the 12 weeks are finished, multiplying the impact across their peers, clubs, and communities.
