A Solo Date with Bridget: Why Bridget Jones Is Still My Hero

By

Yesterday, I took my fine ass on a solo date to watch the new Bridget Jones film. And if you’re thinking about doing the same, let me tell you—you absolutely should.

What I loved most about the film is that it hasn’t stayed stagnant. In the time Helen Fielding and Renée Zellweger have been away, they’ve evolved—and so has Bridget. But don’t worry, she’s still just as delightfully dishevelled as ever.

Bridget’s chaotic, relatable journey had me laughing one minute and crying the next. She inspires me every time—embracing her quirky imperfections, stumbling through life’s curveballs, and leading us through her latest trials and tribulations with such honesty. This time, though, she’s facing some heavy stuff: grief, solo parenting, imposter syndrome and yet she still manages to pull up her big girl pants (literally and figuratively) as she heads back to the world of work.

Watching her navigate all of this with her signature mix of messiness and determination was the kick up the ass I know I needed. There’s something about seeing Bridget confront life’s challenges with her wine in hand and a few fuck wits along the way that reminds me it’s okay.

In fact, Bridget’s resilience reminded me why I started writing in the first place. Like her, I’ve faced my own fair share of curveballs (and cocktails). But seeing her pick herself up, again and again, made me want to grab my pen and start writing for fun again, without overthinking every little word.

So here’s to solo dates, perfectly, imperfect heroines, and finding inspiration in life’s messiness. Because if Bridget can keep going, chaos and all, then so can we.
