For as long as I can remember, New York has always been a dream. It’s the city that’s been stitched into my brain from the endless rom-coms I’ve watched, films like You’ve Got Mail, Sex and the City, and When Harry Met Sally—the ones that showcase the city’s iconic skyline, bustling streets, and of course, the witty, female journalists running around trying to make it big. As a writer myself, I couldn’t help but dream of walking the same streets, while sipping coffee at a café in the Upper West Side or gazing out of a skyscraper at sunset.
And finally, this October, my dream became a reality. Me and Carl set off on our five-night adventure from Manchester to New York, and it was everything we’d hoped for and more.

Times Square, Empire State, and Iconic Movie Moments
Our trip started with an absolute bang. We landed in New York on the 6th of October and immediately immersed ourselves in the city’s vibrant energy. Of course, we had to check out Times Square the neon lights, the billboards, the chaos…..it’s exactly like the movies. But being there in person was something else entirely. We took it all in, had a few pictures snapped, and over the days and nights made our way to some of the most iconic spots from the big screen.
From The New York Times building to Rockefeller Plaza to the magnificent Empire State Building, we checked off all the must-see landmarks.
Staten Island, Cable Cars, and the National History Museum
We packed our days full of adventures! We hopped on the Staten Island Cable Car for some incredible views of the city and headed to the American Museum of Natural History (hello, Night at the Museum fans!). It was everything you’d imagine, event the security managing the queue was like something from a movie.
St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Brooklyn Adventures
Our trip wouldn’t be complete without taking in a little bit of spiritual peace, so whilst in New York and whilst taking in the sights of 5th Avenue, we made our way to St. Patrick’s Cathedral. This has become a bit of a thing me and Carl always do when traveling, we make an effort to visit a church service wherever we are, and this time was no different. It actually felt really special to be there, it was such a beautiful and grand place.
We also ventured across to Brooklyn, and as huge hip-hop fans, we couldn’t wait to see some legendary spots! We checked out Laffette Way, and then Carl, being the massive Beastie Boys fan that he is, was on cloud nine seeing the iconic Beastie Boys Square. The energy there was amazing, so were the rats! haha
Another highlight of our trip was visiting Grand Central Station. Walking through the iconic terminal felt like stepping into another movie moment. The grand architecture, the huge clock, and the hustle of the people. We couldn’t resist snapping a few photos in front of the main concourse and soaking in the atmosphere of one of New York’s most famous landmarks with a few cocktails. After that, we spent the afternoon hunting for treasures at some of New York’s incredible vintage markets. From quirky clothes to unique antiques, it was a real treasure hunt.
Football Fever and Glam Nights
Our trip was full of exciting contrasts, from sporting moments to glamorous nights out. On the 7th of October, Manchester United were playing Brentford while we were in the city, so we headed over to Smithfield’s Hall, a classic sports bar packed with New York Reds fans. Watching the game with fellow Reds in the heart of New York was a such a cool experience. And in true united style, after they went one nil down, they came back to score 2 goals in added injury time, sending the bar wild.

In the evening, we swapped the sports bar for something a little more glam. First up was a trip to Mr. Purple, a rooftop bar with incredible vibes, stunning views, and a fantastic cocktail list. We sipped on delicious drinks, soaking in the Manhattan skyline as the sun set. We followed that with a trip to the 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar, which has one of the best panoramic views of the city. Don’t forget your ID, though, they’re were pretty strict but the night was worth it. The views of Empire State Building from the roof top was vibey AF.
Madison Square Garden and More NYC Landmarks
Next up: the Brooklyn Bridge. We walked across, taking in the breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline, and then we headed over to see Ground Zero, a deeply moving experience. Standing there, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of history, and it was a humbling moment.
Our final night was packed with an iconic NYC experience—Madison Square Garden to see the Knicks vs. Boston Celtics pre-season game. The atmosphere was electric. We couldn’t believe we were sitting courtside at such an iconic venue. And on our last day before we headed back we enjoyed tacos and slammed a few tequila shots (as you do) and we just took in everything in that was around us.
Overall Vibes: Romantic, Cool, and Unforgettable
This trip to New York was honestly one of the best things we’ve ever done together. It was a perfect blend of romance and coolness, with moments of quiet reflection, excitement, and just us. Every corner of the city had something new to offer, whether it was a street food stand or a rooftop bar.
So, if New York’s been on your dream list like it has been mine, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s the kind of place where you’ll be inspired, awestruck, and entertained all at once. Take the underground, visit the churches, explore the vintage markets, hit the rooftop bars, and don’t forget to take lots of photos x.
