A Week in Prague: Bars, Museums & A Little Bit of Mayhem

By

If you’re planning a weekend getaway to Prague, then read on, this city can be an absolute riot. Me and Carl jetted off from Manchester for our first holiday together, and my first ever trip without my kids at the grand age of 43! Freedom never tasted so good. This trip was all about indulging in history, having far too many cocktails, and making some questionable choices (which we’ll get to later). Here’s a rundown of our wonderful, and slightly chaotic Prague weekend.

Where We Stayed

We stayed at the Hermitage Hotel Prague, a stylish, comfy place that felt just luxurious enough without making my purse cry. The breakfast was great, and it was the perfect base for all our adventures.

Tourist Mode: Clocks, Cocks, Creepy Statues & Architecture That Dances

We kicked off our sightseeing like proper tourists with a visit to the Astronomical Clock in Old Town Square. The crowd seem to enjoy watching it chime, ill be honest, it wasn’t a must-see moment for me, but its ticked off the to do list and so…. We also checked out the Dancing House (AKA Fred & Ginger) a weirdly wavy building that made us question whether we’d already had one too many cocktails.

Prague has so many bizarre and brilliant statues, and we made it our mission to find some of the quirky ones:

The eerie Memorial to the Victims of Communism, is quiet powerful and unsettling in equal measure.

David Černý’s Babies, which are basically giant, faceless crawling babies and butts…. Because why not?

The hypnotic Turning Head of Franz Kafka

Museums: From Banksy to, Well… Sex Obvs…

We took a dive into Prague’s museum scene, stopping first at the Banksy Museum for a dose of rebellious street art. Then came the Illusion Art Museum, where reality bent in the weirdest and most wonderful ways. And, because we like to keep things interesting, we wandered into the Sex Museum—part funny, part eye-opening if you are into the history of sex for work purposes obviously, but entirely worth it even if just for the giggles.

Boozy Nights: Hidden Bars & Rooftop Raves

Prague’s nightlife is pretty good, and so we embraced it:

  • Anonymous Bar: A hidden speakeasy where the cocktails were as theatrical as the entrance, here we met Tom and note to self, don’t order Hot Fawkes, the lights in the bar are turned off and everyone turns to look whilst you sit and have your cocktail poured whilst on fire by Tom now wearing a gold anonymous mask.
  • Bar 1401: A cool place to grab a beer or too. And we left our mark here—literally! As we slapped a sticker on the wall alongside the 10000s of others.
  • Duplex Club: I can’t say I remember much of this night, but the venue was cool with a rooftop spot, good tunes, and dangerously drinkable cocktails.

Food & Riverside Chill Time

In between all the madness, we found some down time, opting for the riverside in the vaulted cafés and bars. Nothing beats sipping coffee (or a beer) while watching the world go by.

The Space Cookie Fiasco

Ah yes, the infamous space cookie incident. In a moment of reckless abandon, we decided to try them. Bad move. What started as a giggle turned into a paranoid mess, and went to bed for about 29 hours….0/10. Would not recommend.

Final Thoughts

Prague was a whirlwind of culture and cocktails, and I wouldn’t have changed a thing. It was the perfect way to celebrate my first-ever kid-free holiday, and I can’t wait to go back and do it all over again!
