NHS Wales to offer routine smear test every five years, here’s why.

On 1 January 2022, Cervical Screening carried out by Wales NHS will be routinely carried out every five years instead of three. This will be for all women aged 25 – 49. The announcment from Public Health Wales said ‘If HPV is not found in your next routine cervical screening sample, we will send your next invitation in five years, regardless of your age. This is because the evidence tells us that the risk of developing cervical cancer is very low.’

The news was found to be extremely worrying for many people. Particularly those who have lost loved ones to cervical cancers.

This great post from Eve Appea was really informative and I hope it will help you understand the changes to cervical screening and offer some clarity.
